Getting Used To Wearing Braces

Oscar Allen

If you are getting braces put on, you want to know all the tips and tricks you can do to get used to them as easy as possible. If you talk to different people about their experience wearing braces, some will tell you it was very hard for them to get used to them and others will tell you it was fairly easy. Getting used to braces quickly has a lot to do with your pain tolerance, as well as extra steps you take to adjust to them.

The information below will help you get used to your braces faster and help you learn how to treat them right:

Use dental wax

When you first have your braces put on, they will feel weird in your mouth and there will be some areas that rub the inside of your mouth the wrong way. This can lead to pain and sores if you don't stop the rubbing. Dental wax covers the braces to prevent rubbing. Make sure you use it as soon as you notice friction by rolling it in your fingers and pushing it on the irritating part of the braces.

Eat soft foods

While the after-care instructions may suggest you eat soft foods for a specific amount of time, you should actually let your mouth be the guide. Don't start eating harder foods until you feel you are up to it. Stick to things like yogurts, soups, smoothies and puddings until you feel you can handle harder foods and introduce harder foods on levels. Move up to sandwiches, then up to meats, then up to things lie cereal, etc.

Continue with good oral care

You more than likely already brush your teeth and floss regularly. However, when you have braces on you are going to want to use some extra tools to ensure you are keeping them as clean as possible. You can get small, disposable tooth brushing sticks with a tip that fits between your braces. You will also want to get a floss handle that makes it easier to get the floss around your braces.

Don't put the wrong things in your mouth

This advice doesn't only go for when you first get your braces on, but also for the entire time you are wearing them. You should never, ever use your teeth to open containers, especially when you wear braces. Even something as simple as using your teeth to open a package can cause damage to your teeth and break the wires or brackets on your braces. For this same reason, do not use your teeth to tie something, such as a string.

Following this advice is going to make it easier for you to adjust to your braces and help you to keep them in good shape. Contact a company like Wallington Dental to learn more.

About Me
A New Smile Was the Best Investment of My Life

I grew up in a home with parents who did not insist on good dental hygiene. By the time I was old enough to know better, some damage had already been done. I had many cavities, crooked teeth, and some discoloration on my teeth. I knew it would not be easy to take my smile from where it was to where it is today, but I was determined to finally have nice teeth. I visited a dentist who was very nice and never judged me. We made a dental plan together. Spreading the procedures out over time made it much easier to afford them. I now have almost perfect teeth after all that hard work! I created this blog to help others who have dental problems that stem from bad childhood habits know there is hope! It is never too late to start seeing the dentist!
